writing

Writing keeps track of who you are.
Who you were.
Who you are becoming.
I think that’s the beauty of it.
You sit behind a keyboard
and make yourself vulnerable.
Giving your heart permission
to take control of your hands.
For a little while,
you stop trying to make sense of yourself
and simply tell the truth.
Then months or years later,
you find those words again
and meet an old version of yourself.
Someone you remember being.
Someone you survived being.
Someone who helped build
the person writing in that moment.
Maybe that is what writing really is.
Leaving pieces of yourself behind
like breadcrumbs,
so you find your way
back to who you were
and see just how far
you’ve come.
